Review of Escape Clause by John Sandford

John Sandford’s skill in bringing two different plots together and creatively showing the hilarious part of himself as an author is very tangible in his latest Virgil Flowers’s novel, Escape Cause. The novel makes evident how a thrilling detective story with some truly gruesome elements can effectively be presented in an amusing way with lighthearted words and sometimes comical humors. For readers who desire to read a suspenseful story in a sidesplitting way, Escape Cause is definitely a great novel to collect.

Fans of the series are already familiar with Virgil Flowers, a smart agent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehensions who is known for his thoughtful yet carefree attitude. In Escape Cause, the romantic story of Flowers and Frankie continues, with the romance getting more serious and seeming to envisage a more definite future. The main part of the plot starts when two Amur tigers from a local zoo are kidnapped, with circulating rumor saying that the tigers are about to be murdered and mutilated as their parts are considered valuable Chinese medicines. While Flowers are investigating the case,

Frankie’s inquisitive sister, Sparkle, drops in and compelled to do research on migrant workers—a research that is later deemed risky as there are people who simply don’t want to be researched and are quite willing to do violence to her. Flowers is forced to use his ingenuity in dealing with both cases as he cannot be at two places at the same time. As ingenious and humorous as he could be, Flowers does his role so cleverly and makes the whole story truly enjoyable for readers.

The novel is known to contain a lot of things that make the plot interesting and entertaining. There are a lot of hilarious words uttered by the novel’s characters, but there are also many dead bodies and gruesome elements portrayed in its story. It is an exciting novel for people who love humors, but there are also parts where readers are forced to hold their breath. If you expect a novel full of thrills with some hilarious frills, you may not want to skip Escape Clause.

The majority of reviewers give positive review to this novel. Some even consider it the best novel in Virgil Flowers’s series ever. For Virgil Flowers fans, it is definitely an excellent continuation for the series. For those who never read Virgil Flowers’s story before, it is still a great action-comedy novel to read.
